Company employees in four states provide support to community organizations
BROOKFIELD, Wis. — More than 150 children and young adults in four different states received gifts from OnCourse Learning and its employees during the holiday season.
The e-learning company, which helps 900,000-plus adult learners a year advance their careers in healthcare, real estate and financial services via online courses, purchased and distributed gifts to support the educational advancement of children and teens, and to allow young adults to live more independently.
“No matter your age or situation, education opens doors,” said Patrick Sheahan, president and CEO of OnCourse Learning. “Helping people expand their educational skills and grow their life skills satisfies two of our greatest passions as a company – learning and giving.”
The company’s holiday charitable endeavors included support for troubled and neglected youth along with children from low-income families.
Preparing for life’s next step
A giving tree at company headquarters in Brookfield, Wis., allowed employees to choose young adults to support at Lad Lake, a residential care center for troubled and neglected youth.
Employees purchased gifts for residents ages 17-24 who are transitioning from foster care to living independently. The holiday wish lists included t-shirts, bath sets, headphones, socks and sweatshirts so students would feel more comfortable attending classes.
Lad Lake’s educational programs assist at-risk youth who have been unsuccessful in normal school situations by addressing their unique learning needs. The center also offers programs focused on residential services, outreach and readying residents for life on their own.
Getting off on the right foot
Employees in OnCourse Learning’s Hoffman Estates, Ill., office wrapped more than 175 gifts and personally distributed them to children ages 3-5 at the Community Action Partnership of Lake County’s Head Start program in Round Lake, Ill.
The gifts of books, puzzles and games were delivered to four classrooms at the Round Lake Head Start location, which is one of eight centers in Lake County that serve nearly 550 children.
According to center director Amber Swiderek, 90 percent of families enrolled in the program live below poverty guidelines and many children are from single-parent homes.
Providing school supplies
Team members in the Atlanta office sponsored eight youths between ages 15-18 at The Center for Children & Young Adults in Marietta, Ga.
Employees provided clothing, such as coats, sweatshirts, leggings, shirts and underwear, along with accessories and gift cards for the group.
The gifts were basic necessities needed for students to attend school.
The center provides a safe, nurturing environment with comprehensive services for homeless youth and young adults who have been abused, abandoned, neglected or are at risk.
Building better futures
The team at OnCourse Learning’s Hunt Valley, Md., office adopted an 11-year-old boy who is a resident at St. Vincent’s Villa, a local facility that provides residential treatment and diagnostic services for children ages 5-13 with significant emotional and behavioral challenges.
The boy’s gifts included games and toys designed to improve motor skills, develop the importance of teamwork, build confidence, expand memory, provide problem-solving experience and foster imagination and creativity.
The goal of St. Vincent’s Villa is to move children back into the community as soon as they have all the necessary services and support to ensure long-term success.
