BROOKFIELD, Wis. — Throughout her nursing career, Jennifer Mensik, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, has been actively involved in leadership positions in both state and national organizations.
On Aug. 19, her contributions were honored with the Arizona Nursing Leadership in Action 2016 Award. The honor was presented at the fifth annual Adda Alexander Conference on Patient Safety in Carefree, Ariz. The event was hosted by the Arizona Organization for Nurse Executives.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award as there are so many deserving nurses in Arizona that do so much for our state and our profession,” said Mensik, who serves as executive director for nursing, medicine and pharmacy education programs at OnCourse Learning. “I look forward to continuing to serve both the nursing profession and the state for many years to come.”
Mensik previously served as president of the Arizona Nurses Association and director at-large on the board of directors for the American Nurses Association. She is an instructor at Arizona State University’s College of Nursing & Health Innovation in the undergraduate and doctoral programs.
Lesly Kelly, PhD, RN, an assistant professor at Arizona State’s College of Nursing & Health Innovation, nominated Mensik, citing her exemplary work as a leader, mentor and educator.
“Dr. Mensik has continually been a leader through the Arizona Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association,” Kelly wrote. “Her professional association work has led to her involvement and collaboration in writing articles, books and giving presentations on topics such as staffing, leadership, home health, patient care and policy.
“Her students recognize her passion for evidence and translation of knowledge and see her leadership in role modeling,” Kelly wrote. “She dedicates her time and commitment to students by often meeting with them in one-on-one sessions after hours and on weekends.”
Mensik’s role with OnCourse Learning has allowed her to “impact the education needs of nurses through an interprofessional capacity,” Kelly wrote. “She interfaces with multiple disciplines, representing nursing and professional practice issues.”
The Leadership in Action Awards annually recognize nurses who lead in various capacities throughout the state and who are committed to continue providing leadership over the next 10 years, according to AzONE.
Winners were chosen by the Arizona Action Coalition Leadership Taskforce.
“One of the key motivations for her personal growth as a leader is a commitment to enhancing the abilities and opportunities for all nurses to lead by improving the systems in which they practice,” Hannah Farfour, DNP, leadership taskforce member, said of Mensik. “This commitment is clearly demonstrated in her work in numerous nursing organizations, her teaching and her career choice. The profession is lucky to have her.”
