In-depth content on structure, exteriors, roofs, plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling, and interiors

BROOKFIELD, Wis. — “A Practical Guide to Home Inspection, 4th Edition,” offers home inspectors the latest information on codes, products and practices and features more visuals and diagrams. The 700-plus page go-to guide is being released today by OnCourse Learning’s American Home Inspectors Training.

The text, revised by AHIT Technical Instructor Steven R. O’Donnell, combines what used to be seven books and tackles in-depth topics such as structure, exteriors, roofs, plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling, and interiors. The 4th edition, a cover-to-cover update, is the primary textbook students use when they take AHIT courses.

Code check visuals

“It has been completely revamped to reflect the latest in code information, construction material updates and more,” O’Donnell said. The new version brings home inspection to life with clear, high-quality color images of what a home inspector needs to learn and know. The text also features all new code check diagrams.

“Having code check visuals throughout the book is a big help for readers because the diagrams are familiar to home inspectors and directly relate to code,” O’Donnell said.

“’A Practical Guide to Home Inspection’ is more than a course book,” O’Donnell said. “Because it’s so up-to-date, new home inspectors will find themselves referring to it frequently.”

The book also will help new inspectors meet state requirements for licensing, O’Donnell said. In states that don’t require licensing, it will help students learn how to perform home inspections.

Recalls, best practices

Veteran home inspectors will find value in this new edition too.

The guide covers widespread issues with commonly used building materials to keep home inspectors updated on recalls, changing building industry practices and class-action lawsuits impacting issues they might encounter during home inspections. The book also details how to report findings to the customer.
