Free June 29 webinar features panel discussion on best practices for success

BROOKFIELD, Wis. — Preceptors can have a powerful impact in healthcare organizations as mentors, role models and teachers.

To ensure preceptor programs are working optimally, CE Direct — the corporate healthcare education solution for OnCourse Learning — is hosting the free webinar “Optimizing Your Preceptor Program” at 1 p.m. ET June 29

“Nursing turnover can be expensive and lead to decreased productivity,” said Maria Morales, MSN, RN, CPAN, director of CNE programs, healthcare, for OnCourse Learning. “The investment in training a new nurse is lost if that person leaves your organization. The benefits of quality preceptorship programs are numerous, including increased competence of new hires, improved morale and lower costs.”

Dollars can add up quickly for employers when replacing multiple nurses, according to Morales. Costs include the time and resources of preceptors, as well as paying preceptees during training. Potential unfavorable patient outcomes that might have been prevented with more quality training are an added expense.

Morales will be one of three panelists for the 45-minute event. Blake Ingram, senior vice president for OnCourse Learning, and Lori Perlstein, DNP, RN-BC, NEA-BC, director of nursing education at NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System, also will serve as panelists.

Tips and best practices for improved outcomes of preceptor programs, how to choose preceptors, benefits of a strong program and overcoming challenges will be among the topics discussed.

“Providing quality training for new healthcare professionals transitioning into practice is vital,” Morales said. “As a large number of baby boomers reach retirement age, sharing knowledge and promoting competency through strong, research-based preceptor programs helps prepare new nurses for success as they replace their retiring colleagues.”
