In many states, the real estate governing board has established reciprocity with other states to allow transferring real estate salespeople to continue in their profession without re-taking pre-licensing courses and, in some cases, without having to take that state’s real estate exam. On the other hand, states like California have no reciprocity with any other state, in which case the applicant must send proof of completed coursework from an accredited entity to the California Department of Real Estate. New residents must also file a Consent to Service of Process form to be signed and notarized. In addition, applicants must be licensed with an in-state broker and submit to a background check.
